Chand and team played fabulously: Ganguly
Sourav Ganguly has lauded the Indian Under-19 team for their exploits in Australia, citing their achievement of winning the U-19 World Cup to be a special one. "It's a fabulous achievement. I saw the game on TV.
Winning a world cup in Australia is a special achievement. So, on that point of view, congratulations to the Under-19 boys. Unmukt Chand and his team, they played fabulously," he said.
The former India captain also praised the work of the U-19 skipper, Unmukt Chand, "They were 105 for four, chasing 227 in a world cup final and the captain came and got a 100. So, it is a fabulous achievement."
Ganguly did also point out that the U-19 side would in all probability produce the future talent pool of Indian cricketers, however, he did state that it was still too early to look in to that. "It is still early days. Indian cricket is always strong. But Under-19 is the base from which future generation players are developed.
You see Virat Kohli, three or four years ago, he was the Under-19 captain who won the World Cup also," Ganguly said.
While Kohli certainly stepped up and proved himself at the highest level, another former U-19 World Cup winning captain, Mohammad Kaif, still finds himself battling to find a spot in the Indian squad. The path that Chand and his teammates follow will be crucial in deciding how many of these young players actually make it to the senior team.
