Sydney, Aug 17 : Queensland paceman Alister McDermott, 21, is all set to follow his father, Craig McDermott, onto the world stage after Australia's fast-bowling injury crisis deepened.
McDermott replaces Clint Mckay, who injured a hamstring during a practice match in Darwin at the weekend, for a series of one-day games against Afghanistan and Pakistan in the United Arab Emirates, starting this month.
The selectors hope Mckay will be back for a short Twenty20 series against Pakistan and the ICC World Twenty20 that follows in Sri Lanka.
The squads for the Pakistan series and World Twenty20 are identical, giving ex-captain Cameron Whitethe chance to re-start his international career, The Sydney Morning Herald reports.
"Cameron came back into the squad because we thought in a pressure situation with his experience, he might be better than the younger ones," said national selector John Inverarity.
White lost his place, and the captaincy, last summer.
Victorian all-rounder Glenn Maxwell is one of the three main spinners in the squad, with Xavier Doherty and 41-year-old Brad Hogg being the other two.
